Why I Love Supergirl
This week's season premier of Supergirl on The CW marks the official addition of Supergirl into the Arrowverse. After the positive response during the brief crossover between Supergirl and The Flash, it is safe to say this has been a dream come true for most fans as it heralds more crossovers in the future. The CW certainly knows how to hype it up with their release of the teaser short Superhero Fight Club 2.0 to welcome Supergirl into their superhero family.

After watching the first episode of the new season I am glad The CW had kept Supergirl's fun, upbeat and colourful tone. Supergirl's uplifting spirit was one of the main reasons why the show stuck with me and her cheerful outlook is exactly what our heroes in the Arrowverse need for a bit of a shakedown. It is hard to find a superhero series or film that does not have heavy clouds of impending doom hanging over it and the characters in some sort of depressive agonising state. This is not to say Supergirl does not have its serious moments, the show simply moves through them with a healthier state of mind.

With the introduction of a more neighbourhood-friendly, charming yet dorky Superman this season, Supergirl further steps away from the darker tone of the DC universe set by the big screens. The pair of Kryptonians portrayed by Melissa Benoist (Marley Rose in Glee) and Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale in Teen Wolf) embraces the true meaning of the "S" symbol, hope. I definitely looked forward to watching the latest episode when Supergirl aired during the first season's original run for my weekly dose of warm, fuzzy feelings.

Another reason to love the Supergirl series is Clista Flockhart's Cat Grant. She is the epitome of a successful and powerful business woman who has it all. Her snarky remarks that renders everyone else speechless is one of the highlights in the series. But the best thing about her is when she puts her thorny facade down and becomes the mother figure, mentor and moral support that Supergirl needs in times of existential crisis. Cat's motivational speeches never fails to guide Supergirl and her alter ego Kara Danvers down the right path. Her latest advice to Kara in the new season premier that "in order to live we must keep daring, keep diving" should strike home to many. Just as Kara/Supergirl and Cat Grant inspire each other, they inspire me. I certainly look to the underlying messages in the series for inspiration and motivation.

At the end of the day, Supergirl proves that a show centered around a female superhero can be successful and garner its own sizable fan base. It is way past high time to have a female superhero as the title role and to provide some on screen role models for emerging girlbosses. It was refreshing to watch as Supergirl held her own ground in the face of her cousin Superman and not being overshadowed by him despite his feats being more well-known. The earlier crossover episode with The Flash also showed Supergirl on par with Metahumans if not a bit more super. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Arrowverse will react to the new kickass superhero in town. Supergirl doubtlessly fills the gap left by series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed and Veronica Mars in leading a new generation of girls and I am looking forward to seeing how this will act as the catalyst to prompt an expansion in this area of the media.
